The greater Game was of course the war. A large number of athletes who would have been chosen to go to these Olympics went instead into combat. Ironically, the only Australian to carry away a gold medal from these Olympics was Dan Carroll, the playing coach of the American Rugby Team and former winger for the Wallabies.
